A Cool Mom (Female, Denver, 46-55, Food Service) asked:

How old do you think a person should be before t hey stay home all night alone (parents go out of town on business or stay in a hotel downtown after attending a wedding, etc.)?
I let my daughter stay home alone at 17. My son was almost 20 before we left him alone!

I think my son was 16, but adults were a phone call away. There was no chance of parties or anything, and he's not one to do that anyway. BUT now that he is older and has a gf, i'd be less likely to trust him at home, IJS. lol.

I think you did good. 17 and almost 20 are good ages. By then they are going to either 'be good' or 'be not so good' and you just have to trust that they will respect your rules while you are gone. xo

I think it totally depends on the child...I started pretty young.

It's different now, but I remember being as young as 14 when my parents left me and my sister at home alone when they went out to dinner with some friends. With the Internet and all of the stuff kids can get into now, you just can't do that as much anymore. I think I was 14 and my sister was around 9 when my parents started leaving us at home by ourselves. It wasn't like it was very often though. We knew not to open the door for anyone or to touch the stove. Our grandmother also lived just on the other end of the neighborhood, so we always had options in case of an emergency.
