The thing is that the base salary for waitstaff is very low that tips are necessary. It's stressful working for tips, just like it would be working for commission. If they didn't get tips, there would be very few waitstaff out there and it would be all buffets.

B/c, back in the day, what happened for services like these, is that people started tipping when it wasn't necessary, and the employers realized this... a hairdresser, cab driver, waiter, etc, would get paid equivalent to lets say a lawyer... so, in order to keep things leveled... employers began to cut pay and make most of their income rely on tips... so, blame this on the general tipping public, not those who are actually doing the service.

do you realize waitresses get paid substantially less than minimum wage and cab drivers make 40% of their take for the day and then deduct from that whatever they paid for in gas! Get a grip, Leave a tip!!!

Certain jobs, like cabbies and waitresses, pay lower wages BECAUSE of the tip ratio there. They absolutely should be tipped. That's their income, their bread and butter.

Sadly it is perpetuated in certain industries and the wage rates reflect the level of tipping that normally goes on but I don,t like it either, brings out the worst in people.

Do you realize that the cab driver pays a rental fee for the car and communication devices its using from the company... as well as for gas, AND not to mention the money they make, they only actually get a percentage of, and the cab company gets most of that amount. Don't get me wrong, they make good money, but they have to work literally 24/7 in order to get that... their tip is just a little extra take home... and trust me, their tips aren't anything to write home about... I use to work at a cab company, so I know.

because those working for tips are not paid the same standard wage rate as those who are a librarian or mailman. I can't believe you don't remember the wage rate you got paid as a waitress. Wasn't it like $2 dollars and some change? So, if you worked an 8 hour day you'd be guaranteed a whopping $16 dollars, thereabouts. Big difference from minimum wage.

THEY ARE NOT SALARIED EMPLOYEES BUT MAKES THEIR WAGES ON COMMISSION AND WHAT TIPS THEY GET FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS! THAT'S WHY YOU HATED THAT JOB THAT DID NOT PAY YOU A 100% SALARY! PLUS, AS THE DAUGHTER OF A CAB DRIVER, I CAN TELL YOU THAT THEY REGISTER THEIR OWN VEHICLES WITH THE CAB SERVICE TO DRIVE YOU AROUND; THEY ARE NOT SUPPLIED BY THE CAB LINE AND THEY GET PAID NOTHING IN SALARY! THUS, THEY TAKE EVERY BIT OF THE LOSS IN THE EVENT OF A BREAKDOWN AND PUT OUT OF COMMISSION OR SHOULD THEY BE IN AN ACCIDENT DRIVING YOU AROUND TO THE SAME END RESULT!

I tip when I feel they give me great service,be it a gas jockey,a waitress or even someone that takes out my groceries to my truck. But at the same time,I hate those damn tip jars, more so if they are businesses that are owned and operated privately.

Are you kidding me??? As a server, I make $3.50 an hour. That's barely half of minimum wage in my state and the next one over. I'm lucky if I make $100 on a paycheck. because I don't even get a chance to work 8 hr days because of shifts. Yes, it is my job to deal with what I'm assuming are customers like you who will make me bend over backwards and do cartwheels to keep you happy and then leave me nothing on the table because it's my job to do whatever you want me to, or you'll bitch to my manager. The tip is for what I deem as good service to compliment my paycheck, and sometimes putting up with bad customers. After all, if we didn't have the tipping system, all the food prices would probably go up to support the fact that establishements would have to start paying their staff minimum wage.
