well I can't swim and I have almost drown when I was younger..I have no idea ,,other than try to thriw something to them or find help//jumping in unable to swim unless it wasn't deep isn't going to help either one of us.

I'd try to find something that would reach him/her to pull them to safety. If I was in a row boat, kyak or something of that sort, I'd try to rock it over, upside down, so that we both could hold on until reaching safety.
