Are you scared of pit-bulls?

Since 1979 1/3 of the Nation's dog bites fatalities have been caused by pit bulls, wreaking havoc on the city's public property.

are you still scared of pit bulls? You should be!

Update: December 02, 2008.
To those for pit bulls, you may be right but I still don't like and wouldn't own one. smiles, :O)

Nope.

Each dog has a potential to be vicious, just the danger increases with the dog's overall size, strength, and aggressiveness.

No I'm not scared of pit bulls I'm scared of pit bull owners who buy the dog and train it as a viscious dog, to be a guard dog because of their reputation.

No F*n way. I had a pitt bull for 13 years....from the day he was available at the breader until his last dying breath. He was an excellent dog and great with my daughter when she was born. He was the sweetest, most loving and loyal dog I've ever known. Its the people who raise the pitt bulls to wreck havoc...and they should be shot becuase its their fault for training them that way. Pitt bulls are no different then any other dog...its how they are trained. Do some research!!

not the dog it's the owner. Dogs are not vicious animals, but the owner makes them vicious. Since 1979, how many people have been killed by other people? Are you still scared of people? You should be!

Yep! What gets me are the people with small children that will argue that THEIR dog isn't like that. The fact is that they can, and do, turn on a dime. Who, with a 1/2 brain, would take that chance? I mean, seriously, what kind of parent would take a chance like that with their own child?? Some skewed priorities there for sure.. :/

No i am not scared of pit bulls. Dogs shouldnt be feared because of their breed. Its all in how there raised.

I'm more afraid of the bite from little yappy ankle dogs. Needle teeth can cut deeper, and they are more likely to bite without provocation.

Nope. My cousin has a pit and she is the sweetest most well behaved dog ever. I think it depends on how they are raised, just like with any other dog.

Nope, not scared of them at all. First of all, the "pit bull bite fatalities" are a screwed up statistic, because it's been shown that most people can't even correctly identify a pit bull compared to some of the other breeds. . .everything from Boxers to American Bulldogs to Labrador mixes have been mistakenly identified as "pit bulls." And of course, the media DROOLS over news about pit bull attacks, so even if they don't know the breed involved, they'll just report it as a pit bull attack anyway.

I'm scared of dumb-ass dog owners of ALL breeds who are too ignorant about dog behavior to keep their animals under control, and who allow their dogs to be aggressive toward other dogs and people. I've been attacked by dogs - mostly Labs, but also a Border Collie and a Standard Poodle. I've also been to the ARC's National Rottweiler Specialty, where there were literally HUNDREDS of Rottweilers at the show and not ONE single incident of aggression.

But I personally know MANY pit bulls that are registered therapy dogs. I'd trust them before I'd trust many of the so-called "family-friendly" breeds in the hands of incompetent owners.

OK, OK, OK you hear about the loving pit bull that one had for years, is part of the family, is so gentle etc. Well I'm calling B.S!!! My ex-BIL had a bit bull, as well as one of my good friends. Both of these dogs were wonderful, gentle, etc. and then one day, yes the dog was old, it snapped for no reason. It's in their blood. I'm sorry, but I have seen it too many times. My husband's best friends fiance was attacked recently by a pit bull. All the news stories you hear are about pit bull attacks. Of course any dog can be provoked to attack another dog or human, but when a pit bull is involved it usually ends tragically.

There are some owners that are capable of owning, training and controlling pit bulls. Most are not. These animals should be licensed and regulated, not just sold to any dimwit walking in the pet shop.

That statistic is screwed up considering a few years back when pit bulls were generally banned everywhere, that they only account for 8% of all dog bite statistics.

Yes, I am very scared of pit bulls because I have friends who own them and no matter how 'sweet' or 'docile' they may be, they will always have a tendency to be 'dangerous'...I would rather not have to deal with them so I try hard not to be around them...:)

I got into it with another one of our fellow A/O guys about this issue. There are some people that own pitts and rotts and don't believe that these animals of capable of killing them or their families. And I have been to places where I was greeted by a "friendly" killing machine, but overall I couldn't trust them around my child. I guess it's like having a pet python. Here's what I found.

Dog attacks cause approximately 4.5 million injuries annually, 800,000 of which require medical attention. That is roughly 1 out of every 5-6 attacks.

At least 25 different breeds of dogs have been involved in the 238 dog bite-related fatalities in the United States. Tennessee is one of the top 10 states for dog related deaths in the United States.

****Pit bulls and Rottweilers**** reportedly account for over half of these deaths. This does not mean these types of dogs are more prone to bite, but quite simply because of their pure strength, when they do attack they generally cause more damage.

During 1995-1996, at least 25 persons died as the result of dog attacks (11 in 1995 and 14 in 1996). Of the 25 DBRFs, 20 (80%) occurred among children (three were aged less than or equal to 30 days {neonates}, one was aged 5 months, 10 were aged 1-4 years, and six were aged 5-11 years), and five occurred among adults (ages 39, 60, 75, 81, and 86 years). Most (18 {72%}) DBRFs occurred among males.

Of 23 deaths with sufficient information for classification, seven (30%) involved an unrestrained dog off the owner's property, five (22%) involved a restrained dog on the owner's property, and 11 (48%) involved an unrestrained dog on the owner's property. Of the 25 deaths, nine (36%) involved one dog, nine (36%) involved two dogs, two (8%) involved three dogs, and five (20%) involved six to 11 dogs. All the attacks by unrestrained dogs off the owner's property involved more than one dog. Of the three deaths among neonates, all occurred on the dog owner's property and involved one dog and a sleeping child.

During 1995-1996, rottweilers were the most commonly reported breed involved in fatal attacks (Table_1). Fatal attacks were reported from 14 states (California {four deaths}; Florida and Pennsylvania {three each}; Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, and South Dakota {two each}; and Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Washington {one each}).

From the Center of Disease Control.

Sorry, i disagree with most of the posts, on here.
I know a friend who has one, not a fan of pit-bulls.

But, it does have allot of training of the owner, who has them. but on their mentality, their are some who are vicious, no-matter what. I think to whomever owns them, should use caution..in any event.

Me, i would never want one.. but that's just me and quite a few others.

Don't tell the pit bull lovers that, they will swear no to those stats and give excuses. I'd say i'm more scared of ignorant people than dogs.
I used to have a pitbull (she's on my parents care for now since i travel alot and dont wanna leave her alone). From experience, they are a very jealous breed. They long for affection, touch and sweetness from the owner all the time. Mine gets mad whenever i show attention from another dog since she's used to being the only dog in my apartment. But seeing all these news about kids and pitbulls, i take extra precautions too because i don't want to risk it.
But people who breed pitbulls for dogfights should all go to hell.

They finaly put some laws on them around here. Can't be left unattended any length of time and have to be muzzled any time they are out of the house. Took a while and a few extra chewed up kids for lawmakers to finally realize that the most well intentioned dog lover can't change what centuries of selective breading created.

There's a place for all god's creatures, the pit bull's just happens to be behind bars.

My ex had one, he didn't train it to be mean. However, everytime he left the room the dog would grad hold of me. Either my arm or leg or something. I was terrified.
it used to nip at little kids too.

I agree with ferree. Its the owners since they know pitbulls have the potential to be vicious because of their strengh they use that to train them into these mean dogs. I must admit I was afraid of pitbulls until I got one last year and even though he looks big and mean.He is the sweetest pup hes a big baby. Granted I wouldnt leave my kids alone with him but then again I wouldnt leave them alone with any dog. Dogs bite kids more often bc they see them like dolls. So all in all. You will never learn to love one until you have one. People are mean too doesnt mean were gonna be scared of them like ferre said. Hope you can one da be more open minded about the issue. tootles =)

I would add that out of the dog bites, the MAJORITY were MIXED breeds. There are over 25 breeds that resemble the APBT..over 30 breeds are responsible for fatally attacking humans..from Pomeranian to Bull Mastiffs..you gonna ban/eliminate those 30 as well?

Most dog bites generally involve children that have been left unattended by irresponsible adults.

Another MYTH is that APBT jaws lock. And that IS a myth. NO BREED has that quality..the leading top 3 authorities on dog anatomy have all said this. Want the names? I have them.

Best way to prevent dog attacks. FIRST BE A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER and NEUTER YOUR DOG. SECOND..have some common sense and watch your children..most dog bites are provoked. THIRD..don't chain ANY DOG..they become very protective of their tiny space.

Many will disagree..and that's fine as well. What a shame though this ignorance may very well be a deciding factor in genocide.

I understand peoples hesitation, I have an AmStaff "pitt bull" and she is 7yrs old. I have a 4 yr old and a 8 week old. My 4 yr old rides her around the house and they are best friends. She even sleeps with my son. Pit bulls strive to be loving to there owners and are committed to there family "Loyality".

You cant always be hateful there is no room for that attitude, if you dont like the breed then stay away and be quite, stop blogging about it that wont change anything.
