What do you think about DUI check points?

What do you think about these DUI check points? In our state if you turn around and try not to go through them you get ticked for evading even if you are legal and doing nothing wrong and if you wait in line the wait is sometimes up to a hour and a half.

Update: January 05, 2009.
They accually find a lot more people with drugs, wepons, warrents,e xpired license or plates than they do drunks it is more or less a catch all

I think it's an "illegal search", by its very nature.

If they have no reason to believe you are drunk or otherwise breaking a law, they have NO RIGHT to 'detain" you in any way, shape or form.... period!!

I'm all for them if it keeps one family from losing someone because of a drunk driver. Life is fragile and not worth risking due to the purposeful negligence of someone else. It's bad enough that people die from accidents without putting alcohol in the mix. If you want to drink go for it, but stay out of the car after you do it is my thing. And hour an a half that could possibly save a life is well worth it to me.

Never been through one..but that's bullshit about turning around. I've been known to do that with a few roadblocks. ;)

I would happily wait at a check point if it would get just one drunk driver off of the road. My second cousin was killed by a drunk driver on the way home from school two weeks before her HS graduation. It's just like security at the airport. Unfortunately, because there are pathetic selfish a-holes out there, we all have to suffer.

You gotta move to Utah. The Utah Highway Patrol has these down to a science. They can check and clear hundreds of cars in an hour. I've never been delayed more than 10 - 15 minutes. I'm behind it 100% if it saves even one life.

Not so sure I like it. There's an automatic suspesion...Is the drunk driving incidents that great to actually warrent it? This country is in an economic crisis and there's too much of big brother since 9-11.

I like that they get the drunks off the streets and the other violators.

I am a law-abiding citizen, but these things creep me out. It seems like a major intrusion - like being arrested without cause - especially if they can "detain" you for an hour or more with no suspicions. Somehow, this is not part of the freedoms America brags about.
I got caught in one once; it only took a minute or so. they looked at me and waved me on. I really look pretty innocent.

Around here they announce where they are and when before hand which i find silly, why tell where their going to have the check points, I think its a good idea to have them to keep the drunks off the road but ,its just doesnt make much sense around here when they tell where there going to be.

a few months ago I was coming home from work and had been warned in advance of one, so I went down the alley which was not blocked off, and a cop came chasing after me right up to the driveway. I went into the garage. I went in my house, he had his lights on, no siren going. I didn't go out because I didn't feel I did anything wrong, the road wasn't blocked off. I wish they'd go hassle someone who is really doing something wrong.

I think these checkpoints are a waste of time and money because when/if there is a checkstop or something around here, everyone knows it before it even has a chance to get set up...believe me, I've called the cops on a lot of drunk drivers and even gave them names of the people and nothing was ever done because the cops told me they would have to 'see' them behind the wheel before they could arrest them...sometimes it's easier to evade them than it is to actually catch a drunk driver...:)

I think DUI checkpoints are fantastic. I've had to get out of the car and let them do the drug dog thing, that sucks. But I was a 20 year old girl in a Mustang GT so, I guess I looked like a criminal. lol. But now, I have a daughter and have been hit by a drunk driver. Caused several broken ribs, chipped teeth, concusion. Nasty. So anything that can be done to decrease the odds of my daughter getting injured my some IDIOT driving intoxicated is cool with me.

It's totally amazing what we citizens must put-up with from
these so-called "public servants" protecting and serving us.

Oh, BTW... Thanks for that T-B-D invite, that's a cool site!

Unconstitutional? I guess getting drunk and killing an innocent person is OK then.. damn.. I had a cousin killed by a drunk woman. I guess she had her rights....

I think it is a good thing if that was all that they are looking for. When you go threw one all they should do is stop you flash their sobrity flash light in your face and ask how is you night. If you come up clean then just keep it going.
Now, if it is traffic violations they are looking for then they should set up check pooints for that and that only. Just keep the traffic moving. If I am drunk and Stupid enough to drive then just put me in jail.
Yhe traffic violation sholud be handled when the police are sitting around drinking coffee and chit chatting. Or, running red lights because they are in a rush to get home.

I think they're a good idea in principal, but not if people are fined for trying to get home earlier when the lines are an hour long! You definitely shouldn't have to be forced to wait 60 minutes for a police checkpoint!

As for the cops being able to do random dui checks on popular drinking nights, I think it's a good idea and can reduce drunk driving if folks know that they risk being checked. I wish my friend who died in a DUI had encountered checks like that, it may have saved his life.

I think that they are totally worth it even though it may be an inconvenience to some it is best to get the DWI's & DUI's off of the road. It saves lives more than one can imagine . . .

I have no problem with check points and agree that they catch more people on other charges than drunks. I have never waited more than about 10 minutes at a stop but would be very upset if I had to wait an hour and a half. That is way too long. At that point the line had to be vey long and would turn around and they could try and catch me. I would go to court and fight the ticket.

Well, it is as I have always said, while they are checking for some non-important crime, the car passing by, has a dead body in the trunk!

Waiting around in a line for nearly an hour is more than I care to do. It does not seem to be an efficient way to catch a drunk driver. I would not like it at all.

The more checkpoints the better.

People who drive drunk need to be arrested and charged with attempted murder.

If a person sees other people's lives as less important than drinking their liver to shit, then they need to be removed from society STAT!
