Universal HealthcareI think universal healthcare is great. But healthcare is a two-way street. If people want to be "taken care of" they need to share in the responsibility... duty... of being accountable. Why should I have to bear the burden of a person who smokes, drinks, does drugs, and is morbidly obese. It is unfair to the people who take care of themselves and lead a healthy lifestyle. Life Insurance companies have actuarial tables for people who smoke, and are over certain weights. Some airlines actually reduce airfares for passengers who are height and weight proportionate. The Japanese government went so far as to compel citizens to weigh in, and gave overweight citizens sixty days to lose an appropriate amount of weight. My question is: Should people be accountable to society as a whole be compelled to lead a healthier lifestyle, in order to contain medical costs for everyone? - Asked by richfromringgold, An Intellectual Guy, Male, 36-45, Philadelphia, Who Cares? |

You make a valid point...but we all have to remember...these people have their *rights*....which makes them feel entitled to do as they darn well please...while running their big mouths at the same time.

Good health is a duty we all owe to one another. I once weighed 331. I'm 5'9". I was asthmatic, had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and the beginning of cardiac issues. I was depressed and suicidal. When I removed myself from an emotionally abusive marriage of 19 years, I joined a gym and lost 127 lbs. in 17 months... What took 19.5 years to put on took only 17 months to take off. I'm half the man I used to be, I can fit in a regular coach seat w/o a seat belt extender, my cholesterol has dropped to 137, my asthma is much better. I am a new man and half the man I once was. I'm on 1/3 of the medication I took 3 years ago. I visit the doctor once a year. for all the good the gym did me our infinitely wise governor now charges sales tax on gm memberships. If I can do what I did at the age of fifty (losing 127 lbs), anyone with some intestinal fortitude, perseverance, and guts can get their shit together if they really care. My self image is much better and I added fifteen years to my life expectancy. Oh and by the way, I never felt so hopeful about the future. You are exactly correct rich. People should be accountable and pay accordingly. Just like people who can't drive w/o injuring others the greatest users of healthcare should shoulder the majority of their healthcare costs.

Ouch. There is something fundamentally wrong with this argument. While we all share a goal as a society to keep people as healthy as possible, we would be remiss to think that good healthcare should only be reserved for those who have chosen a "healthy lifestyle".
