If you knew that the engagement ring around your finger was as a result of genocide, would you still feel comfortable wearing it?

I hope that when I find the woman I want to marry, she's not hung up on the diamond tradition because of the greed of these people.

No. I don't need or want a diamond anyway. If I ever meet Mr. Right...who would have to be a perfect fit to my imperfect jigsaw piece for me to call him Mr. Right... that improbability alone would make me so esctatically happy that I couldn't care less about jewelry. Not that I wouldn't appreciate something pretty and sparkly, but seriously, no.

It is a tragedy about the way diamonds are mined, and then on top of that they are artificially inflated. There are enough diamonds on earth, (already mined), that would make every man, woman and child on earth a millionaire. However, one problem, once everyone on earth is a millionaire, then they are are equally wealthy, which in turn makes them all poor. All valuables are created, dug up or invented on the back of others. I don't have diamonds, neither does my wife, and blood diamonds are the worse, but most diamonds are mined at the expense of someone. You don't think Bill Gates is digging up diamond in Africa do you? Major holder is Debeers.

I'm sure everything in this country can be traced to greed, blood, scandal or money...we would all be bartering, back in huts, wrapped in leaves otherwise...unfortunate ly it all goes with the "evolution" of man.

I have never dated a man that would buy used diamonds lol...The diamond shouldn't be tainted just because the person was killed. A diamond is a stone not the passing on of misfortune. Rosey

We Americans are so self-centered, we will buy the hide of our ancestors if we could get a nice return. We have purchased sugar and chocolate from similiar situations, but we don't care. I remember during Apartheid, there were Americans wanting to continue to purchase from South Africa. We have been told that some of the clothes that we purchase comes from sweat shops that use child labor. There's very conscience here.

See, this is why the only diamonds I have are the ones in my wedding ring.

Diamonds are beautiful, but they are too expensive in more ways than one.

Oh so you saw that movie? I didn't know that till I watch it. No I wouldn't feel great wearing it but how many other products that we use are the result of someone's suffering?

The thought of just being married to my life partner would mean more than a ring so I wouldn't even think of where the diamond came from, it would mean more to me just to have my man in my life...:D

Absolutely not! As a matter of fact, if I ever get married, I don't plan on wearing any type of ring that can be taken off but rather getting a tattoo that will last forever just as marriage is intended to.

I have a pair of friends who just got married, and she insisted that her ring NOT be a diamond for this exact reason. I stopped wearing pretty much all jewelry when I was in the 7th grade for the same reason. My grandmother gave me a gold chain for xmas one year, and I gave it to my mother, cuz I refused to wear it.

This type of thing is hard to get away from in today's world though. Ever heard of Tantalum? It's a metal that's used in the manufacture of pretty much every piece of consumer electronics in existence. Cellphones, computers, DVD players, video game consoles, all have this stuff in it. Most of it is found in the Congo, and it is mined under much the same conditions as blood diamonds. When the PS2 game system was released, the price of tantalum jumped about 300% in about 8 months. 11 year old African kids are working 16 hour shifts in tantalum mines so that 11 year old American kids can kill imaginary aliens.

It all sucks.

Some scientists from MIT set up a way to MAKE real diamonds using carbon particles. It's high tech and takes a long time, but the diamonds are real and usually flawless, costing about 30% less than mined diamonds-with none of the blood.

As for blood diamonds, no I couldn't wear it. If I knew, I would sell it and use the money for a humanitarian cause.
