Invited a co-worker to a birthday party

A few of my co-workers are having a birthday party for one of the secretaries at work. I asked another secretary if she wanted to come. When I did she did not respond in any way, she sat there at her desk looking at me. I started feeling uncomfortable and I told her if she wanted to come, let me know. I then walked away.

In the past, if I invited someone to a social event people would either tell me they were coming or say they had already made plans and they couldn't come. I've never had anyone to sit and stare at me until I left.

I can't read her mind but do you think she simply did not want to attend and couldn't think of a good excuse of why she couldn't come?

My guess is that she felt angry/hurt that no one planned a birthday party for her and so she doesn't WANT to attend, but instead of saying what she truly thought/felt, she said nothing.

I would guess she didn't have a ready excuse. I assume she's someone you talk to regularly enough that it'd not be weird for you to invite her? I suppose that's a weird way to handle it but you handled your end properly and just walked away...

I would have just said let me know if you are coming and moved on. You invited her and its up to her to either accept or reject. Rosey

She might be in the middle of a fight with the other secretary.
Could be upset no one threw a party for her, though her birthday is just past or the same day.
she might be going through someting major that has nothing to do wih you, her or work: Had a coworker who's brother died, was basically walking around in shock, wouldn't say why, till someone called a family member and found out why.
