Let's say this is your job ...You sit at a desk all day and do next to nothing but the job is secure and the pay is decent.

I could do it only if I had to. When the economy changed or I found another job, I would quit in a hot minute. I absolutely hate jobs like a receptionist position that require a person to remain seated at a desk.

You say doing next to nothing. Are you supposed to be doing something? You could read or whatever, but that would be hard if they think you should be doing something else. If they know you are just hangin out, it would do me for a spell. But I don't think I could make a career out of it. I could easily work an office job, but I would need to feel I'm accomplishing something.

Yes I could do this all day. Used to work at a bank and had a similar job. Would get up and walk around every fifteen minutes and the worst part of the job was sitting under flourescent lights all day. But I loved working there. Best job I ever had.

I could not sit and do nothing all day long. Whatever the business was -- I would be researching and learning and expanding my knowledge in that field. I would read professional journals and attend professional meetings. I would do everything possible to help my employer be more profitable.

About 14 years ago I had such a job. Not really, but in the mid-90's the economy had slowed way down. My boss had ran out of work and had nothing for me to do. I mean nothing. He still wanted me to come into work every day just in case something was to pop up that needed attention that day. He didn't want to let me go because he valued me as an employee and feared he'd lose me if he did lay me off. Which he would have. For 6 weeks I came in and surfed the net all day every day until he did have to let me go. It was the LONGEST 6 weeks of my life.

Here's a thought ...admit to your supervisor that you have some available free time and that you would enjoy a bit of a challenge... I am sure that he will be able to suggest something with the economy the way it is for you to do...

If I could read a book I could put up with it for a time. In fact thats about the only kind of "job" I could do. I'm more cut out to be a homemaker and that is what makes me happy.

With the economy the way it is, I could do that job. Once the economy was better, than I think I would want to find a job that I could use my skills at. That's what I would choose to do.
