International Marriage?

i've heard that if an american couple gets married in a foreign country, in order for that marriage to be recognized by the united states government it must be witnessed by at least one other citizen of the united states. is that true?

No.

You do not need an American witness and as long as the marriage licence and certificate are in English or translated into English the marriage will be considered valid and binding in the United States.

no. the marriage will be recognized if you have the legal paperwork. and then you'll need to submit a K-3? visa to allow your new wife/husband entry into the country. and that process takes like a year or more

I don't think American couples married in a foreign country need anything more than a copy of the marriage license to have their marriage recognized in the States, just as long as the copy of the marriage license is able to be translated to English and is recognized as legal and binding...I don't know about the witnesses but I imagine one of them should be American...:D

No that's not true. As long as the government of the country in question recognizes the marriage the US will recognize it. However to get a visa for the spouse to enter the US it will be far easier if you get a letter from the American Embassy that gives permission for you to get married. If you are both citizens or legal permanent residents there will be no problems at all.
