getting pregnant while on the pill??

I'm on the pill currently but i've known/heard of alot of women getting pregnant when they were on it. Is this common? My mom got pregnant with me when she was on the pill so i've always wondered. It's supposed to be 99% effective so yeah lol. Any stories or opinions/responses would be greatly appreciated!!
