When do men start beating women?

When I was in high school I had a few BF's and they
never hit me. But while I was in college I dated older men and they ALL would beat me. I was seriously
hurt twice! Now I am dating a 19 year old. I have
been dating him for almost 2 years and he never hit
me.
So is it normal for men to hit women?
